Movie Trailer - Grudge Match

Director: Peter Segal
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Alan Arkin
Release: December 25th, 2013

I am ashamed to say it, but I really want to see this movie.  It doesn't look quite as stupid as I had imagined it would; it's more like a farewell to two extremely influential actors as they grow old and die.  Maybe a little depressing, but I want to be a part of it.  Now, I am worried about the director, the guy who brought us Nutty Professor II, Anger Management, 50 First Dates, and Get Smart.  Oh well, this has Alan Arkin in it and he can do no wrong.  I'm in!

Movie Trailer - Nebraska

Director: Alexander Payne
Starring: Bruce Dern, Will Forte, June Squibb
Release: November 22nd, 2013

This film is getting serious Oscar buzz; I bet Bruce Dern gets a nomination for Best Actor.  Of course, that's all a bit premature, but at least it looks like a movie worth seeing.  Payne directed About Schmidt, Sideways, and The Descendants; all strong films.  So I think this one is worth two hours of our time.

Movie Trailer - Escape from Tomorrow

Director: Randy Moore
Starring: Roy Abramsohn, Elena Schuber
Release: October 11th, 2013

This movie looks freaky.  And weird.  And freaky again.  Randy Moore is a first time director, so we don't even have anything to compare this movie to.  I don't know, it might be too weird to give a chance to, even if there's a tiny possibility that it's good.

Movie Trailer - The Past

Director: Asghar Farhadi
Starring: Berenice Bejo, Ali Mosaffa, Tahar Rahim
Release: December 20th, 2013

I really want to see A Separation, but I'll settle for this one.  I saw Berenice Bejo in The Artist, but it's hard to judge what kind of an actress she is from the movie.  So I guess this film is a big unknown for me, but I kind of like that.

Movie Trailer - Best Man Down

Director: Ted Koland
Starring: Justin Long, Jess Weixler, Tyler Labine
Release: October 3rd, 2013

OMG.  And not in a good way.  First off, awful title.  And then the character who dies name is Lumpy?  Is this a joke?  The acting sure looks like one, and unintentionally.  I think I'll be skipping this one and recommending that you do the same.

Movie Trailer - Kill Your Darlings

Director: John Krokidas
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster
Release: October 16th, 2013

A true story about Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs?  Sounds interesting.  The trailer doesn't really do much to promote the movie though; makes it look a little boring.  And come to think of it, jazz & the Beat generation & all that, is pretty boring.  So maybe never mind.

Movie Trailer - Morning

Director: Leland Orser
Starring: Leland Orser, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Laura Linney
Release: September 27th, 2013

I don't know, this looks a little too depressing to watch.  I don't mind dark movies, but I'm not sure I want to watch a couple disintegrate after their child dies.  Maybe the acting and direction will be good enough to make audiences overlook the heavy nature of the film.  Or maybe people will just enjoy being reminded that life can short & terrible.  But I kinda doubt it.

Movie Trailer - We Are What We Are

Director: Jim Mickle
Starring: Michael Parks, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner
Release: October 2013

I like the idea of a good Gothic horror movie that relies on emotion rather than surprise.  I don't mind being creeped out, I just don't really like things jumping out at me.  I'm intrigued by this one; it's a remake the 2010 Mexican film of the same name.  I wouldn't want to watch it alone, but if I could get someone to see it with me I think it'd be worth the watch.

Movie Trailer - All Is Lost

Director: J.C. Chandor
Starring: Robert Redford
Release: October 18th, 2013

I honestly thought Robert Redford was dead.  But since he's not, he might as well make another movie.  This one looks interesting I guess.  I mean, there have been a hundred movies made that look pretty much the same, but that doesn't mean it'll be bad.  He's a good actor, I like disaster films, and as long as he doesn't start up a conversation with a volleyball I guess I'm in.

Movie Trailer - All Is Bright

Director: Phil Morrison
Starring: Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, Sally Hawkins
Release: October 4th, 2013

I don't know this director, and holiday movies usually suck, but I am going to see this one.  Paul Giamatti is one of the best when it comes to playing a depressed loser.  And Paul Rudd may choose too many bad projects, but he's a genuinely funny guy.  I'm in.

Movie Trailer - RoboCop

Director: Jose Padilha
Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton
Release: February 7th, 2014

I never was into the original RoboCop movies.  They seemed a little too silly and I'd just rather watch The Terminator.  This new one looks about the same; a little weird and not worth the effort when there are other/better sci-fi options out there.

Movie Trailer - The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Starring: Kyle Catlett, Helena Bonham Carter, Callum Keith Rennie
Release: October 16th, 2013

There's something about this movie that appeals to me.  It could end up being a total flop, but I think there's a magical quality about it that I'm going to love.  I guess it all rests on the shoulders of the kid and how strongly he can support a film.  But hey, this is the director of Amelie, so I'm in.

Movie Trailer - The Fifth Estate

Director: Bill Condon
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Bruhl, Laura Linney
Release: October 18th, 2013

It's nice to see a movie that's so relevant and current.  I don't always like national security crisis movies, they tend to be a little ridiculous and always star Ben Affleck.  But I like the look of this one; it's like The Social Network but better.

Movie Trailer - August: Osage County

Director: John Wells
Starring: Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin
Dermot Mulroney, Juliette Lewis, Chris Cooper, Sam Shepard
Release: December 25th, 2013

Supposedly the play is good, but wow does this look bad.  Julia Roberts is like a whirlpool that pulls everyone around her down to her level.  And that level is 'crappy'.  Maybe the movie would have been awful without her anyway; most stories about family & divorce are.  It's like people don't realize that life doesn't look like this.  They should, they live every day, and Dermot Mulroney never shows up.

Movie Trailer - Dallas Buyers Club

Director: Jean-Marc Vallee
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto
Release: November 1st, 2013

I wish they had cast about any other human on the planet as the female lead in this movie.  Jennifer Garner is horrible; is that even up for debate?  What's she doing in a film that looks really edgy, interesting, and well done?  She doesn't belong here.  That might sound mean but I don't care.  Maybe this movie doesn't end up being amazing, who knows, but regardless she shouldn't be in it.

Release: October 11th, 2013

I may be an American Idol fan, but they didn't need to trick me into seeing this movie by adding some alum into it.  The story itself got me, and the hope of seeing two child actors that can carry a heavy piece like this.  I bet they pull it off.

Movie Trailer - Pompeii

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Starring: Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Carrie-Anne Moss
Release: February 21st, 2014

There isn't much detail in this trailer, but what there is doesn't look that good.  Why do directors think that every man in ancient times had a six-pack and went around shirtless?  Or maybe it's the authors of the graphic novels that some of these movies are based on that are making all this shit up.  I'm fine with fantasy, but I'd like to watch a movie about a historic event that seems halfway believable.

Movie Trailer - The Book Thief

Director: Brian Percival

Release: November 15th, 2013

Any movie about Nazis, Jews, and WWII automatically peaks our interest, because that was such a fascinating time in history.  Making a heartbreaking film about that period is pretty easy; it's making a great one that's hard.  This doesn't look like it's going to be amazing, but it looks well done.

Movie Trailer - Fading Gigolo

Director: John Turturro

Release: September 2013

For a movie about a male prostitute, this movie looks kinda boring.  It has a Woody Allen feel, but with lesbians and flowers.  I don't know, I like John Turturro, but I have strong doubts about this one.  I can't see myself giving it a chance unless I hear some surprisingly good things.

I get that making movies based on bestselling tween books is a guaranteed way to make money.  But do you have to pick a book that is almost a complete ripoff of Hunger Games?  Aren't there any other mediocre novels to choose from, ones that don't feature a heroine in a dystopian United States?
